Kitchen Makeover

Unknown // Thursday 14 June 2012

I meant to post this when Kelly's Korner did her "Show Us Your Kitchens" linky party, but totally forgot to take the pictures. I had a few minutes yesterday so I snapped a bunch and here we are!

When we first looked at our house I had a "vision" for our kitchen.  It was originally a family room and kitchen, but I envisioned it as more of a kitchen/dining combination area.  We switched out the light fixture and what was once the "family room" in our house became the eating area.  I had ALWAYS wanted a fireplace in my kitchen - so it worked out perfectly!  My mantle is a work in progress at the moment, hence the empty picture frame.

I used to have some cute prints in these frames, but swapped them out for some of Luke's "early artwork" and he couldn't be prouder. :)

This little hallway houses our hot water heater on the right and our master bedroom on the left.

The drapes are hung a little unconventionally, but the previous owners left us all the expensive hardware already installed so we decided to just go with it.

Looking from the other direction (excuse my crooked candle and weird lightbulb situation - hehehe)

I LOVE me some brick wall!  It's funny, because on a daily basis I really don't notice it that much, but this picture REALLY shows it off.

This is what the same view looked like in April!
(There's junk everywhere in the "before" pictures because as I was in the process of cleaning and organizing cabinets and emptying drawers for the painters to come and take the doors and drawers away I thought about snapping before pictures - OOOPS!)

The area with the big chair was where the original owners had their dining table.  Now we have the big chair (which I have plans to recover) and this is where Luke likes to read or play while I'm making dinner)

We had this AWESOME business, The Painter Chicks, come and refinish the cabinets back in April/May. The whole process took about 2 weeks and was relatively painless (we had wet paint for about 5 days and after that were without drawers and doors for about another 10).  The did this whole big process to get them all painted, stained, antiqued, distressed, etc. and we are IN LOVE! We also added hardware.
(there's two rugs in here because I bought the big one yesterday and haven't moved the other one - the one by the stove - out yet.  I think I only want the bigger natural one.  Thoughts???)

Before the refinishing (again with the mess - SORRY!)

The bay window is one of my favorite little niches to decorate - right now July 4th!

Luke and I made the rockets earlier this week.  SO FUN!

I used to have four kind of "Italian" looking pictures above the cabinets, but with the fresh paint I decided we needed a different look up top so I just used a bunch of stuff from all around.  Still tweaking it.

This little area used to be a wet bar (before we bought the house - the previous owners decided to cover it with granite when they renovated) complete with shutters.  How classy :)

We couldn't be happier with how the cabinets turned out and think that it was a HUGE "bang for our buck". The kitchen area is where we spend a large chunk of our time and it's a comfortable and relaxed place to be.
