Last Minute Mother's Day Ideas ...

In the UK, Mother's Day - unlike just about everywhere else in the world, I think - is always the 4th Sunday in Lent.

Mothering Sunday, as it is properly called, was the one Sunday in the year when you were meant to go back to your home parish if you had moved away.

Effectively, it was the one weekend in the year in which domestic servants - like those at Downton - would get to go home to see "mum" as Christmas and Easter would be far too busy at the "big house".

And as you were allowed to break the Lent fast on Mothering Sunday, daughters would traditionally take home with them a rich fruit and marzipan Simnel Cake, which is now usually made at Easter instead.

Personally I love Simnel Cake but if you are not convinced that your mum would thank you for it, here are some other great last minute ideas for Mother's Day ...
