Party planning?

Unknown // Friday 2 November 2012

One of the reasons I end up having to plan Christmas to the nth degree is the added complication of my birthday 6 days before and littl'uns two weeks after Christmas.  Littl'un is absolutely adamant that she's having a birthday party - she currently requires a Peppa Pig cake although obviously this may change the day before! - so am going to have to get invitations out and as much as possible organised and out of the way before Christmas actually starts.

We did have a party last year but just a small one for the neighbours as she was only two.  This year what with neighbours and nursery and NCT friends, am starting to worry that we are going to end up with almost 20 sugar crazed under 5s turning the house into a war zone!

Anyway - as you'd expect from me! - I've started to write a check-list of everything I am going to have to deliver to meet littl'un's dauntingly demanding standards as to what constitutes a satisfactory 3rd birthday party.

So as ever, I need your help.  This is what I've come up with so far - what else do I need to worry about? What are your top tips for avoiding melt down? What games did you play? Have you got any advice on cutting costs? Have you found any good sites with freebie templates?  Please do share with me your stories and world weary words of wisdom!

  • Venue - will have to be our house as not forking out for a hall!
  • Day - Sunday gives you chance to get ready on Saturday but Saturday gives you chance to clear up before work on Monday
  • Timing - have got to allow for those still napping.  How long can it last?
  • Invitations - has anyone found any good templates we could print off?
  • Decorations - must get a balloon pump this year as am now too decrepid
  • Birthday cake - what are the best sites for cake kits?
  • Party food for children - what do they actually eat? what's a waste of time?
  • Special food for allergies - at least one close friend is nut & egg allergic
  • Party food for adults - is pizza & wine sufficient?
  • Games - what do they enjoy most? what goes down like a lead balloon?
  • Music - what's best place to get freebie / cheap compilations?
  • Other entertainment - what else can we do apart from games without breaking bank?
  • Party bags - can you provide something decent without forking out small fortune?
  • Thank you notes - any cool craft ideas so that they can do them themselves?
I've added a linky so if you have any great posts do add them here:
